What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is for everyone.

It is a primary health care system with a holistic approach.

Back pain

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It is based on the principle that the health and function of the body depend on the well-being of the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues that make up the whole musculoskeletal system.

Holistic Approach

Treatment is focused on addressing the root cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms. This is achieved by taking a holistic approach to develop an understanding of the person and their problem. We look at how the issue or condition impacts the surrounding structures and how the whole body and its systems are working together.  All these factors will play a part in the diagnosis treatment and recovery process.

Manual Therapy Without Drugs

Treatment incorporates a range of different techniques which can include soft tissue techniques, physical manipulation, stretching and articulation of the joints. The aim of the techniques is to improve mobility, reduce tension and increase the blood and nerve supply to tissues which assists your body’s natural healing mechanisms. In addition, advice on posture and exercises are often provided to assist with recovery as well as preventing issues reoccurring.

What to expect on your first visit

Case History

So that Osteopaths can diagnose the issue a full medical history will be taken as well as your general health and current presenting issue. This means that all aspects of your health can be considered and not just your current symptoms.

A full assessment and postural analysis will be taken as well as examination of the symptomatic area. To be able to fully assess the whole body, patients are generally asked to dress down to their underwear. If this is an issue, please feel free to bring along loose clothes/shorts and a vest top.

After the examination, the diagnosis and suitable course of treatment will be discussed with you. Occasionally if we are concerned about your health we may need to refer you to your GP or another specialist for further tests.

Treatment will then be provided which can consist of massage techniques, joint and muscle mobilisations and manipulation.

Exercise & Advice

In most cases the treatment can be supported by prescribing rehabilitation exercises to help reinforce the treatment and the body’s ability to heal itself.

"Couldn’t recommend higher. Joe is thorough, focused, personable, and highly motivated to relieve the pain and heal his patients. You can tell that Joe really cares about finding the cause of the injury by the detailed questions he uses throughout his treatment. He explains fully (in layman’s for me) what is happening with the body and then treats the area using his expertise. He then gave me manageable exercises to help the body heal faster. Joe worked wonders to heal my shoulder first via video call and then in the clinic he really managed to eradicate the issue. I’d highly recommend him. In fact I did and he healed my partners thumb as well. Thanks Joe."

“I saw Joe on two occasions during my first pregnancy. The first time was because I was suffering from bad headaches and couldn’t take any drugs. Joe identified it was a cervicogenic headache. The treatment really eased the pain I was feeling and it felt so much better afterwards. So, when I had some hip pain, I went straight back to see him and the treatment he provided worked wonders! I highly recommend seeing him if you suffer from any pain during your pregnancy as Osteopathy can really help.”

"I’ve been to see Joe several times with various back issues. Each time he has identified and treated the problem successfully, luckily in only one session. He makes his job seem easy, but I know from past experience that all osteopaths are not as good as he is. Joe is friendly and approachable and puts you at ease, as well as being conscientious and thorough. He also showed me exercises I could do to keep my back in good condition and minimise the likelihood of having further problems. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to clients and friends."

"I first went to see Joe with severe upper and lower back pain, following a car accident. Joe is very professional, warm and friendly. He made me feel at ease on each visit and the treatment received, including the exercises he prescribed was fantastic and ultimately led to a full recovery. I would 100% strongly recommend Joe to anyone who requires osteopathic treatment."

“Joe has been a lifesaver! I go back to see him whenever I have an issue. Over the years, he’s treated me for neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain and triceps tendonitis. His kind, calm consulting manner is always hugely reassuring. His treatments are always thorough, and he has helped me recover from each issue with speed and ease. I can’t recommend him highly enough.”
