What Is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is for everyone.
It is a primary health care system with a holistic approach.
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It is based on the principle that the health and function of the body depend on the well-being of the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues that make up the whole musculoskeletal system.
Holistic Approach
Treatment is focused on addressing the root cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms. This is achieved by taking a holistic approach to develop an understanding of the person and their problem. We look at how the issue or condition impacts the surrounding structures and how the whole body and its systems are working together. All these factors will play a part in the diagnosis treatment and recovery process.
Manual Therapy Without Drugs
Treatment incorporates a range of different techniques which can include soft tissue techniques, physical manipulation, stretching and articulation of the joints. The aim of the techniques is to improve mobility, reduce tension and increase the blood and nerve supply to tissues which assists your body’s natural healing mechanisms. In addition, advice on posture and exercises are often provided to assist with recovery as well as preventing issues reoccurring.
What to expect on your first visit
Case History
So that Osteopaths can diagnose the issue a full medical history will be taken as well as your general health and current presenting issue. This means that all aspects of your health can be considered and not just your current symptoms.
Examination
A full assessment and postural analysis will be taken as well as examination of the symptomatic area. To be able to fully assess the whole body, patients are generally asked to dress down to their underwear. If this is an issue, please feel free to bring along loose clothes/shorts and a vest top.
Diagnosis
After the examination, the diagnosis and suitable course of treatment will be discussed with you. Occasionally if we are concerned about your health we may need to refer you to your GP or another specialist for further tests.
Treatment
Treatment will then be provided which can consist of massage techniques, joint and muscle mobilisations and manipulation.
Exercise & Advice
In most cases the treatment can be supported by prescribing rehabilitation exercises to help reinforce the treatment and the body’s ability to heal itself.
